Defense of course papers by 2nd-year students majoring in 035 Philology specializing in English-speaking countries literature took place today. Our young professionals presented their first research in literary studies, demonstrating competence, a creative approach to studying English literature, as well as achievements and mistakes that served as valuable experience for future research. In their papers, students analyzed a variety of contemporary works, considering translation challenges, stylistic features, and themes. Each work contributed to expanding understanding of English literature and the translation process. The selected works covered a wide range of topics, from fairy tales and science fiction to psychological drama and post-apocalyptic realities, allowing young researchers to explore different literary aspects.
Writing a literature course paper was quite challenging, as students and their academic supervisors had to overcome numerous obstacles. Firstly, choosing a topic was crucial, as finding a unique and relevant topic that interests the student and holds scientific value is often very difficult. Researching sources also required considerable effort, given the vast amount of literature and materials available, requiring selection of the most relevant ones. It was also important to distinguish scholarly sources from pseudo-scientific ones, as using unreliable information can lower the quality of the research.
Structuring the paper is essential for successful course work, as having a clear plan and coherent presentation of thoughts is necessary. Analyzing literary works demanded deep knowledge and understanding of context, style, symbolism, and other aspects. Students had to grasp key literary concepts and terms and use them correctly in their work, including scientifically applying terminology for analyzing works and argumentation.
Equally important was learning to effectively allocate time for writing, editing, and reviewing the course paper, which also posed a challenge that needed to be overcome.
