On May 6, 2025, the Department of Foreign Philology organized an engaging session with experienced translator Denys Diomin, specializing in technical writing translation freelancing. The meeting aimed to provide higher education seekers in the field of Philology with valuable advice regarding this specific area of translation.
The translator shared insights into working with technical texts, particularly translating software, emphasizing the importance of understanding types of technical translation, technical terms, and the ability to quickly grasp new concepts. He recommended that students not only systematically maintain and update their vocabulary but also stay informed about the latest technological developments. Organizing one’s workspace effectively was also highlighted to enhance translation efficiency.
Effective methods for translating technical documents were discussed, including the use of specialized online resources, tools for automation (CAT programs such as Phrase, XTM, MateCAT), work volume analysis software (TRADOS STUDIO, MemoQ), and auxiliary specialized literature (MS Localization Style Guide). The translator stressed the importance of concordance search, maintaining accuracy, and demonstrating competence in task execution.
The session concluded with students’ questions regarding practical aspects of freelancing as a translator and competition in the job market. All participants appreciated the usefulness of the information shared during the meeting and expressed hope for future cooperation and support in this complex field of translation.
